Pistachio Bloom

Pistachio Bloom

Pistachios are one of the last deciduous crops to bloom in the San Joaquin Valley. Many people don’t realize that pistachio trees are either male or female. The male trees grow the fuzzier looking flowers in the first picture. They produce the pollen that is blown to fertilize the flowers produced by the female trees, second picture, which will turn into pistachio nuts. The third picture shows a bunch of nuts from a female tree that is further along in its development.
